Wednesday 16th January at 7pm

Dimity Spiller will talk about “The Oriental Carpet in Sixteenth Century England”

Dimity taught history of design in architecture, interiors and furniture for the Inchbald School of Design, then did an MA in History of Design 1400-1660, from the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal College of Art. She did a thesis on early carpets, including a port records research, at the Public Record Office in Kew, to see how much was being imported. This important archive will be lodged on the ORTS Website.

Tuesday 19th February at 7pm

Duncan Clarke’s lecture is titled “An Introduction to West African Textiles”

Duncan is a London based researcher and dealer in African textiles. He will bring textiles to show us.

He has published several books and articles on African textiles, including “The cloth from Bondoukou: textiles of the Ghana/Ivory Coast border” in HALI 157, 2008, “The Art of African Textiles” 2002, “African Art” 1997. He has a Ph.D on “Yoruba aso oke weaving” from SOAS.

Wednesday 20th March at 7pm

Gina Corrigan will talk on “Nomadic Costume in Amdo and Kham” in these areas of well preserved Tibetan Culture.

Gina has travelled regularly to the Tibetan Plateau in North West China since 1982, visiting the Kham of Sichuan, and studying the Amdo region of Qinghai Province. She is preparing a book on the life and textiles of the nomads in this region.

She is well known for her books on the minority tribes in China and her costume collections are in the British Museum and the World Museum of Liverpool.

The Oriental Rug and Textile Society meets at: Swedenborg Hall, 20/21 Bloomsbury Way, London WC1A 2TH Entrance round the corner in Barter Street. Doors open from 6pm. Drinks and snacks are served, and we have a T-loop induction coil for hearing-aid users.

Swedenborg Hall is four minutes walk from Holborn Underground, and six minutes walk from Tottenham Court Road Underground. Free parking in Barter Street, Southampton Place or Bedford Place after 6.30pm.
