Spring Programme for January - March 2010

Thursday 21st January at 2pm

Visit to the V&A to see textiles from Dunhuang and carpets from Loulan

See textile and carpet fragments bought back from Central Asia by the explorer and archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein.  The V&A have a collection of over 650 ancient and medieval textiles recovered by Stein at the beginning of the 20th century.  While there are a few on exhibit in the public galleries, this will be an opportunity to see textiles and carpets in the store, introduced to us by Helen Persson, Curator in the Asian Department.

Thursday 11th February at 7pm in the Swedenborg Hall.

Professor Michael Hann will give a Powerpoint presentation on: “The Origin and Diffusion of Motifs and Patterns in Indonesian Textiles.”

He will also show a short film: “The Ikats of Sawu Island” (which was filmed around twenty years ago in the eastern part of the archipelago, and re-edited recently – it shows various stages of traditional ikat production, seemingly no longer practiced). Professor Hann holds the Chair of Design Theory at Leeds University, and is Director of The University of Leeds International Textiles Archive (ULITA).

Thursday March 25th at 7pm in the Swedenborg Hall.

Dr Ken Teague will talk on “Travels in the Taurus Mountains, Turkey 1990-4”

Ken will show slides and bring weavings from his travels to collect tents for the “Nomads” Exhibition he curated for the Horniman Museum, where he was Curator for Asia.

The Society meets at: Swedenborg Hall, 20/21 Bloomsbury Way, London WC1A 2TH. Drinks and snacks are served, and we now have a T-loop induction coil for hearing-aid users. Details of how to become a member can be found here. Non-members are welcome to attend for £6 a lecture including drinks and snacks.
